Reports in Spain suggest contact has been made between the two clubs and the 26-year-old's agent Inaki Ibanez says the player is waiting for Liverpool's decision.

"The player knows about this subject and now the decision lies with Liverpool," Ibanez told Spanish newspaper Publico.

Alonso's sale would give Benitez the funds to sign Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry, who has also been linked with a move to Arsenal.

I cannot see this happening. Would be amazed if Liverpool sold one of their players to us. Depends how desperate they are to get Gareth Barry though I guess. :s_dunno

Rafa's been getting more desperate about Barry, but I don't think desperate enough to let go of Alonso.

Liverpool will never sell us any of their players. They would lock them away in a tower before doing that. I wouldn't mind of we got Barry though...or Xavi but that's not on.

I wouldn't say it's entirely impossible. Obviously rivals don't usually sell players, but it's not unprecedented. Not to mention that if Rafa really is that head-over-heels crazy for Barry, he'll sell Xavi for some extra funds if Villa are holding out. It kinda makes sense actually from everyone's perspectives (Scouse, us, and Villa). That said, when will logic ever win in the transfer market....

Let's remember that each of the last two seasons, we've gotten a player from Chelsea at the deadline...one is our captain now.

Well somebody is "FUCKING NEEDED"...unless you think Diaby can handle it right now.

I'm not saying he can't, but I'd MUCH rather see Wenger buy.

Frankly, I don't know.

Like Tom and I were talking about later last night, I don't think we need a flashy player as a CDM. We need a guy like Flam (minus the fucking off to Milan part), who was quiet, but hard nosed. Flam just went out and played with incredible tenacity and protected his back line. He let Cesc do the offensive maestro bit.

Now as to what player fits what I've just described? I frankly have no idea. Then again, that's why I'm not the manager and Wenger is...complete with huge scouting network.
