Arsenal took revenge on Everton in the women’s Community Shield with a well-deserved 1-0 win.

Arsenal were always the favourites going into the match, but Everton had a psychological edge having won the FA Tesco Women's Premier League Cup final last season.

Everton made a nervous start as Arsenal piled on the pressure, and Arsenal could have taken the lead in the second minute when Everton keeper Rachel Brown failed to deal with a Rachel Yankey corner.

But it was Everton’s Jo Potter who had the best chance to open the scoring for Everton in the early stages when, after 12 minutes, she found herself with a clean shot on goal following a defensive blunder.

Emma Byrne in the Arsenal goal was equal to it, however, and it stayed 0-0.

Defensive errors from both sides created chances for both sides in the remainder in the half and Kelly Smith proved a constant menace for Arsenal, but neither team was able to take advantage.

Everton’s Toni Duggan came close on the stroke of half-time after battling her way through the defence, but steered her shot
wide.

Karen Carney enjoyed a decent effort from outside the box as Arsenal turned up the pressure at the start of the second half, and Jayne Ludlow should have given them the lead when she misjudged her header from a deep cross.

On the hour, Kelly Smith used her pace to create another chance in the box for Arsenal, but Carney’s shot was blocked at close range by Brown in the Everton goal.

However, the pressure finally paid off in the 72nd minute when Kelly Smith gave Arsenal the lead.
Everton had given their all to keep out a series of Arsenal attacks, but the ball came to Smith on the edge of the area and she was able to lob the ball into the empty goal.

Smith suffered a blow when she was substituted with an injury moments later, but she revealed after the match that it was simply the result of cramp.
